On Thursday Feb 4th, 2016 the Michigan Senate passed an anti-sodomy legislation that makes all acts a felony offense punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
The legislation was sponsored by Sen Rick Jones, the bill doesn’t specifically target gay people in the state, the legislation outlaws anal sex completely.
Sen Jones says the bill is linked to the prevention of bestiality. The text of the legislation is as follows.
” A person who commits abominable and detestable crime against nature with mankind or with an animal is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment of no more than a 15 years.”
If the person is found to be a “sexually delinquent person” or an existing sex offender, they will face a life term in prison.
Sen Jones, said attempts to revise the clause to remove the wording “mankind” could jeopardise the legislation as it moves through the Michigan House of Representatives.
There are currently 12 states with anti-sodomy legislation even though the US Supreme Court in Lawrence Vs. Texas ruled anti-sodomy laws to be unconstitutional.
The twelve states are Louisiana, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
